DICT eyes 50,000 free Wi-Fi spots

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) aims to have 50,000 free Wi-Fi spots across the country by 2028 to improve internet access for Filipinos.

Information and communications technology Secretary Henry Aguda there are already 18,000 such sites and he wants to roll out the program in schools.

The free Wi-Fi program is seen to benefit 9.8 million users across 1,401 cities and municipalities, including 3,040 geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas.

The DICT previously expressed its intent to sign a contract with a satellite internet company to provide connectivity in 10,000 locations at cheaper rates.

The DICT is also extending subsidies to telecommunication companies and common tower providers.
