In a strategic move to strengthen the resilience of its infrastructure, Manila Water is investing ₱158.16 million in a comprehensive lightning and surge protection project across eight key facilities within the San Juan grid. This initiative is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to operational reliability and public safety.
The massive tech-safety upgrade, which is now 100 percent completed, covers the Cubao pumping station, Balara PS 1 and 2, Maybunga PS, N. Domingo PS 1 and 2, Pasig PS, and San Juan PS 1. These facilities are being equipped with advanced protection systems designed to mitigate the risks posed by lightning strikes and electrical surges.

Key components of the project include the installation of a static dissipating air terminal lightning protection system, which is designed to intercept and safely redirect lightning strikes away from critical infrastructure, thereby minimizing the risk of damage.
Additionally, transient voltage surge suppressors are implemented to shield sensitive electrical and electronic equipment from sudden voltage spikes, ensuring operational stability and equipment longevity.
The project also features upgraded grounding systems, which play a crucial role in safely dissipating electrical currents into the ground, significantly reducing the potential for equipment damage and operational downtime.

“This investment is a proactive measure to safeguard our facilities, our personnel, and the communities we serve,” said Jeric Sevilla, director for corporate communications affairs at Manila Water.
“By enhancing the resilience of our pumping stations, we are ensuring the continuity of water service even in the face of extreme weather events and electrical disturbances,” Sevilla adds.
The upgraded systems will not only improve safety and reduce hazards but also extend the lifespan of critical assets, resulting in long-term cost savings and improved regulatory compliance.
Manila Water’s continued investment in infrastructure modernization reflects its dedication to delivering reliable, uninterrupted water service to its customers—rain or shine. /das
