2 suspects in Marawi City murders caught in Butuan City

Anti-narcotic operatives arrested seven suspects, including two minors, in drug buy-bust operations on Saturday, March 15, in Rizal, Batangas and Cavite provinces.

CAMP SK PENDATUN, Maguindanao del Norte, Philippines — Police have arrested in Butuan City two suspects who fled there after hacking to death a couple in Marawi City, Marawi City Mayor Majul Gandmara said.

Gandamra said the Butuan City police arrested the suspects on Saturday, May 17, in Barangay Dulag in Butuan City, a day after they allegedly attacked Bairah Sangcaan Monte, 56, a resident of Molundo, Lanao del Sur, and her husband, Usodan Hadjicaya Monte, 58, of Tamparan town.

The couple, who owned the B&E Inasal Restaurant in Sarimanok, Marawi City, were found dead at the establishment’s basement about 7 a.m. on Friday, May 16, said Police Colonel Robert Daculan, Lanao del Sur police director.

The victims sustained hack wounds in the head and body and died on the spot, Brig. Gen. Romeo Macapaz, police director in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), said.

The suspects have been turned over to the police for prosecution.

Maj Salahuddin Basher, chief of Lanao del Sur police public information office, said investigators found the couple’s master bedroom in total disarray, an indication that the perpetrators also robbed the victims.

Earlier, Gandamra directed the city police to determine the motive of the incident, identify the suspects so that appropriate charges can be filed in court.
